Spring Shoes To Feel The Flutters For

We’ve all (mostly) seen fashion week; seen the trends, the shows and what the models were wearing off-duty. We can all readily admit that this season feels like it’s a “anything goes” season. There were over-sized layers, minimal looks, suede everything, 90’s everything, floral everything, super feminine, super masculine etc… and the list goes on.

Fashion has been having a major moment over the last few years because designers are thinking out of the box, and onto the streets, to see what’s actually being worn.(This is not new news..) Colors, patterns, chunky heels, suede, and jeans that have had everything done to them to ensure uniqueness, is the norm these days. Gucci layered their loafers with fur, and if it doesn’t get more impractical than that, then we can for sure assume that amazing, non-practical (but weirdly practical at the same time) fashion will be here for a while

All that to say.. Check out some ideas for your spring/summer shoe closet!

I’m loving metallics, loafers, mules, menswear inspired shoes, bright colors, and ultra feminine styles, wedge espadrilles, and wedge everything. Like I said… Anything goes. Creating unique, special and exciting looks are the beat this season. Dig up some oldies but goodies and see how you can style them!

I’ll readily admit that some styles that are missing are perhaps a fun ankle boot and flat sandals.. but those are practically closet basics.

Let me know what you think! What does your shoe closet look like? What are some things you can see you may need/want?

How To! Wear Flirty Lacy Tops Like An Adult

I’m turning the big 3-0 this year and my nerves are almost shattered. Apart from it meaning that I have to admit to being half a real adult now, it means that there’s certain things that I just really can’t wear anymore. (An article about that later…)

During New Years, one of my closest darlings came to visit us in the UK. Whilst out shopping I found the cutest little white lacy number that would’ve looked adorable on her. Her opinion was different because she felt that she would look like a child in such a dear little top. (She’s gorgeous btw). I, however, disagreed, and have since made it an effort to come up with a way to wear a flirty little number without looking like a desperate 16 year old. (If you find that I do, please tell me!)

The first order of business is to find a top that fits you really well in all the right places. This goes without saying.

Secondly, the bottom. Right now destroyed denim is everywhere, especially high and mid waisted, also boyfriend and flared styles. Any of these are a great companion to your little top, but if destroyed denim isn’t your thing, then try a solid dark blue (or black) pair of high-waisted (or mid, depending on your body type) jeans with a nice wide belt that stands out. Then add your shoes. I’d go with a strappy heeled sandal to distance your self, in this case, from the sneaker wearing youths.

Hair and makeup is next, and I currently love doing a low semi-messy bun.  Think Dolce & Gabbana. (I tug at the back of the hair so it’s not super neat looking.) I love this demure look because you can wear anything bold and that low bun tames it right down. For makeup, I did a bold smokey eye with a soft, natural lip and dewy cheeks to lift the overall look and again, and add age to the top. This is the one good time where you want to add age. Doing a neutral, no makeup look is good for the beach in the middle of summer, but any other time and your overall look will appear more juvenile that necessary. (Unless you were to do the other elements of this look, in which case you could probably get away with it.)

Last but not least is statement jewelry. A cuff bracelet and heavy (think huge) earrings add a touch of sophistication and timeless style. (Again, Dolce & Gabbana esq)

Check out my look below!

Wintery Warm Look!

Who loves being cold?? Absolutely no one. What I love about this look is that it has great details and lots of textures. The buttons on the pants compliment the eyelit holes in the sweater, while the tassels play off nicely on the bracelet. The suedes also compliment each other. Super cozy!

My Fear Of The Flare is No More!

With flared, loose and flowy pants creeping back into our closets, it can be hard to style them without looking like you’re on your way Mexico for vacation. The fear that I had with flared pants is that I’d end up looking like a 40 something art teacher, though there’s nothing wrong with being a 40 something art teacher, except if you’re 29 and you look 40. Unless you want to look 40 as a 29 year old in which case; to each their own.

My fear of the flare has slightly been diminishing as I’ve experimented with different looks and combinations to create stylish, age appropriate and unique looks. I’ve so far managed to invest in two pairs of linen pants, and I’m terrified of them. My previous post about flared pants left me wanting/needing more so I created some more style options for palazzo pants if not for this blog, solely for my peace of mind. Check it out and tell me which are your favorite and why!

Cool Days

I went with a monochrome scheme so that it could work for any season or mood. Here I paired a cropped mock turtle neck sweater with the linen pants, and suede heels (or sneakers). To add a style element we threw in the fringed handbag and paired the whole look with classic sunnies. When it comes to palazzo pants, I’ve noticed that cropped anything is great! And if you do wear an oversized sweater to pair it with heels. If you decide on sneakers instead, make sure that your hair and makeup is sleek and clean to prevent a shabby look.

Warm Days

I paired the linen pants with a nice thin tissue tee for days where the weather is a little more forgiving. Something that hangs nicely off the shoulders. Suede sandals (or sneakers again) and the suede fringe handbag complete the look and add that great style details. I added mirrored sunnies to give the look a definite fun, summery feel. I’d wear my hair loose and beachy for this vibe. If a tee is not dressy enough for your situation, try a cropped fitted sleeveless tee or even a loose fitting tank.

Your Guide To The Top 10 Spring/Summer Shoe Must-Haves

Every year we wait eagerly to see what the trends will be come spring and summer, “will those high-waisted denim cut-offs still be trendy? What about those wedged sneakers?” Nothing is more infuriating than investing in something that’s only stylish for a short season before it becomes a faux pas. One season might be sporty and athletic, another might be minimalistic and simple.

This year is no different. We saw colors, suede and texture on the runways this year along with some major street style vibes from fashion bloggers world wide, and it all seems to point in one direction (R.I literal P Zayne?). Apart from still having a foot in the norm core scene, trends seem to swinging back towards a more feminine approach to style with a sprinkling of that 70’s gamine look with a smack of bohemian.

That’s not to say we’ll all be walking around with flowers and feathers in our hair (although nothing surprises me anymore), but you’ll be seeing suede everything, denim everything and white embroidered everything. Along with all of this, naturally, comes the shoes. Though I wouldn’t suggest purchasing 10 pairs of shoes (for your banks sake), I would look at these and find similar items that speak to this seasons trends.

I’ll be creating some outfits in the coming days and weeks with these along with more season appropriate closet must-haves.

Shoes of the Season!

by Cat Russell

It seems like the sun has finally decided to show us it’s beautiful face! Gone are the morose clouds, endless rains and foggy mornings. Instead we find the birds chirping and the kids frolicking. You finally have peace about putting your heavy winter boots away and embracing the warm tingling sensation of the sun on your feet.

It’s time to revisit our shoes, the ones we wear in the Spring and Summer, and if you’re like me, sometimes, in the Winter. I’m loving everything native, leather, easy, comfortable and something that reminds us of when we were young and carefree. Summer in California is about re-living your childhood. Everyday.

To start off with, you need a good, solid, go-to summer sandal. It’s the shoe that you’ll end up wearing the most, and with most everything in your closet. If you choose a good leather pair, they’ll even last you a few seasons. The style should be simple, but classic. A slip-on, so you can run out the door. Next you’ll need a good solid ballet flat, something that’s comfortable and makes a bit of a statement style-wise. Whether its a fun color or a classic tan, be sure its something that you can live in and something you won’t be afraid  to possibly wear with everything. Either a peep toe or closed toe are super cute, but why not get both. Last but not least I always suggest having a good wedge sandal. Nice enough to wear to garden soiree’s and tennis club luncheons, but fun enough to do your grocery shopping in. Pair them with flowing linen pants or cotton sailor pants and a loose tank tucked in a little and you’d be the talk of the town.

Below are a collection of sandals and flats we love for this season.

The list, and why we love them:

1. Hive and Honey Claudette Sandal – We love because of it’s simple leather design, but the ankle strap adds a touch of flirt. Can be paired with your favorite skinny’s (make the ankle strap go over the jeans to add spice) and white tee, or add a boho flair to a pencil skirt and tank.

2. Mulberry Signature Ballerina Candy Pink Smooth Patent – Love this, the color is bright and fresh and the design modern and simple. Any flat with these elements would be a great purchase. Pair these with red skinny’s and striped black and white tee for a foxy look or simply with white sailor pants and loose off the shoulder tee.

3. Lucky Brand Silvia – This chunky wedge is such a perfect answer to any outfit dilemma. Its versatile style and detailing, along with the nude color will go with practically any outfit, from skinny jeans, to a long skirt, short skirt, wide-legged pants, lace shorts etc. This is definitely a summer must-have.

4. Marc by Marc Jacobs New Love China – Rose Gold Leather Shoes – What we love about this shoe is the color, it’s bold and fresh. The shape is flattering to your feet and it’s also easy to slip on. The peep-toe adds that extra touch of foxy. Pair this shoe with those red, high-waisted cotton shorts and tee or your LBD.

5. Coconuts Native Womens’ Flats – Love this simple, every day shoe that you can throw on while running errands or simple puttering about. It has a feel of that coastal town life and, paired with the right outfit, will make it seem like you’ve been on vacation your whole life.

6. Madison Harding Camel Delilah Platforms – Love the simple design. The Wedge is a new “flatform” type and brings a fresh and trendy aspect to any outfit. In the Winter time, wear it with socks or tights to add aspect to your outfit, or to just make a statement. This shoe speaks of relaxation and full on Summer fun. Wear with just about anything.

7. Cynthia Vincent Laurie Flat – This flats’ simple elegance yet bold statement is perfect for Spring and Summer days. A white shoe is a necessity in any closet and this beauty looks small but it’ll say a lot about the woman that decides to wear them. They speak of vacations in Venice and strolled streets in Paris. Again the key elements to look for in a similar shoe is the fact that it’s white and has that cute peep toe. Anything along those lines will work.

8. Rick Owens Leather sandals – The beauty in these sandals are the simple design, the non fussy-ness and the fact that you can just slip them on and run out the door. The thin lines serve to accentuate the elegance of the foot and again, this can be worn with any outfit. Something to keep in mind when looking for your perfect slip-on flat is that the shoe has to look good on your foot. Make sure you keep those feet looking fresh!

9. Ancient Greek Sandals Melpomeni braided leather sandals – I love this shoe! This is the kind of sandal I would wear every single day of the Summer. The design is simple and elegant. It has that foreign flair that suggests you found it in a flea market in Bali and the color would look gorgeous against your tanned summer feet. Simple key features are the the slip-on factor, the braided string down the middle and the toe.

10. Qupid Puffin 28 Stone Canvas Lace-Up Ankle Booties – These are perfect for those cooler Spring days, paired with anything from colored tights and mini skirt to skinny jeans or high-waisted flared pants. The light color suggests the lightness of Spring and warmer weather, making it the perfect combination with your more Spring-esq outfits.

11. Madewell Belle By Sigerson Morrison® Suede Flats – Your basic ballet flat with an extra kick! I love the old, classic victorian style. This shoe is more versatile than it lets on and can be paired with black tights and a black skirt for an up-do situation or with your favorite harem pants and off the shoulder tee for a light, summery day. Wear these well! This unique design is sure to garner attention. Key elements in this shoe are the frontal area and the pointed toe.
