I’m turning the big 3-0 this year and my nerves are almost shattered. Apart from it meaning that I have to admit to being half a real adult now, it means that there’s certain things that I just really can’t wear anymore. (An article about that later…)

During New Years, one of my closest darlings came to visit us in the UK. Whilst out shopping I found the cutest little white lacy number that would’ve looked adorable on her. Her opinion was different because she felt that she would look like a child in such a dear little top. (She’s gorgeous btw). I, however, disagreed, and have since made it an effort to come up with a way to wear a flirty little number without looking like a desperate 16 year old. (If you find that I do, please tell me!)

The first order of business is to find a top that fits you really well in all the right places. This goes without saying.

Secondly, the bottom. Right now destroyed denim is everywhere, especially high and mid waisted, also boyfriend and flared styles. Any of these are a great companion to your little top, but if destroyed denim isn’t your thing, then try a solid dark blue (or black) pair of high-waisted (or mid, depending on your body type) jeans with a nice wide belt that stands out. Then add your shoes. I’d go with a strappy heeled sandal to distance your self, in this case, from the sneaker wearing youths.

Hair and makeup is next, and I currently love doing a low semi-messy bun.  Think Dolce & Gabbana. (I tug at the back of the hair so it’s not super neat looking.) I love this demure look because you can wear anything bold and that low bun tames it right down. For makeup, I did a bold smokey eye with a soft, natural lip and dewy cheeks to lift the overall look and again, and add age to the top. This is the one good time where you want to add age. Doing a neutral, no makeup look is good for the beach in the middle of summer, but any other time and your overall look will appear more juvenile that necessary. (Unless you were to do the other elements of this look, in which case you could probably get away with it.)

Last but not least is statement jewelry. A cuff bracelet and heavy (think huge) earrings add a touch of sophistication and timeless style. (Again, Dolce & Gabbana esq)

How To Rock Your Girl Boss Blazer

Every fashion group preaches from the roof-tops that a major closet staple is a black blazer. The necessity is real, whether it’s a boyfriend fit or completely tailored to your body. Wearing a blazer in such a way that you don’t come across like a wannabe lawyer takes a little bit of crafting, but it’s totally do-able and the look is absolutely amazing.

Throw a blazer over a vintage tee with distressed denim and you have a classic cool-girl look. It’s the perfect accessory to a really bold look, for instance a heavily textured skirt or dress, perhaps something with really bold patterns.

I felt like this is the year of the girl boss for me, and I found this blazer just in time! There’s something uplifting and strengthening about wearing what you’re feeling. It encourages you to take bold steps and make risky decisions, that hopefully pay off in the long run.

Happy New Year!!

Outfit Inspo! For The Occasion

I put a look together for an occasion where you may have to look a little classier but still a little relaxed. I’m totally obsessed with this cropped metallic knit tank, it gives the whole look a hollywood vibe when you pair it with these classic high waisted trousers and the vintage esq clutch. I would drape the blazer over your shoulders to polish it off.

I’ve had a love affair with all things earrings since I was a child, running around the house with my moms clip-ons and a scarf as a cape.

Oversized earrings have made a tremendous comeback. Dolce and Gabbana have been paving the way for years, but the rest of the populace have finally caught up to the exotic, the fabulous, the chic oversized earrings. There’s something pretty striking about a woman who can rock great accessories.

My favorite look is a tee, a pair of jeans, booties and a great pair of oversized earrings. They make a great statement piece without you losing the luxury of comfort.

We moved into this gorgeous old house and I’m loving playing around with the different rooms. It has this captains house vibe to it so it inspired my sailor look. It’s all about detail! Experiment with different ways to tuck in a shirt, it’s one of those key pieces that everyone should at least have a couple of options in. This is a classic Ralph Lauren button up mens shirt  that I stole from my husband back when we were friends.

Have fun!

The Oscars: What They Wore

When it comes to award shows, street style, premiers etc. I find myself quite quick to point a finger at the celebrity wearing the crazy dress or weird outfit and in fact I find a sense of joy/sympathy knowing that they wore something that I never would have chosen. I never stopped to think that maybe they love it. Maybe they think it’s gorgeous, and maybe they feel like a queen.

I’ve been writing about style and fashion for a long time now and realized something. It’s quite easy to have an opinion at the cost of someone elses’ dignity, but if it came to it I would never in a million years say those things to their face. I would be a classic a**hole and they would be mortified. For instance, I thought Emma Stones’ dress this year was too yellow and didn’t do much to show off her amazing complexion. But then I stopped and thought that maybe she loved that specific color. Maybe she chose it because she felt beautiful, and if so, then, who am I to take away her freedom of choice by judging her and calling her out on her inferior choice of attire. I actually have absolutely no right. Instead I look at the girl and realize that she radiates in that dress, that she does actually look quite stunning. This same thought translates to non-celebrities as well, if that wasn’t obvious.

We hold onto our freedoms so tightly and are willing to fight tooth and nail for the right to be someone and have our voice and choice be heard without so much as a negative eye glance, (think the anti-vaccine movement, LGBT movement, feminist movement, you name it) yet here we are, taking their choice and throwing it back in their face as if it were inferior to our own wisdom. Now sure, there are some who wear clothing brought to them by stylists and some who follow blindly; trusting that the decision suggested to them will hold up in front of the clicking cameras and babble of opinionated voices. We should offer encouragement to them, then, and say that their beauty far outshines any dress they could wear, or, have we the chance and relationship, we offer an honest but loving opinion.

When it comes to someones identity and self-esteem we should be careful that we aren’t wounding with our words. What if the same were said about us. What if we were thrown in front of a camera and our hair, makeup, skin, body, dress were mercilessly torn a part. The majority of us couldn’t survive it.

Maybe we should encourage and exhort, say kind words, and if even if we think it hideous, we look not at the dress but at the soul wearing it. We would then see beauty and we would lavish them with compliments. It’s what’s right, what’s fair and what makes us beautiful not only on the outside, but also the inside.

What I love about style and fashion is that we can play and have fun with it. You can be anyone or anything you want to be. This is the freedom that we all have, we get to choose. Let’s not take away another persons right to choose simply because it’s not what we would have done. Let’s celebrate their uniqueness, individuality and ability to be creative.

What are your thoughts on how we treat celebrities? Do they deserve our criticism or should we be more forgiving?

This written by a very opinionated and choosy fashion bunny.

The Golden Globes Style Recap

Who watched the Golden Globes!? I love the awards aspect of it, but the part that really gets me excited is the dresses, the beauty, the glamour. Who doesn’t love watching what the ladies bring to the proverbial table with their flowing gowns, gorgeous manes and glittery eyes.

The looks I felt half sad about:

The looks I loved!  These ladies killed it by being modern, glamorous (but not showy), classy and chic. Arriving at the Golden Globes with anything other than those style characteristics is simply a waste of time. What I prefer to see on a woman is a long dress with a flattering shape, made to fit well, in a color that flatters not only the skin tone but also the grandeur of the event. Keep the color story simple so that your dress can be magnificent.

Trend-spotting, Pieces We Still Love: Light Blue Jeans

I had no idea I’d love the idea of light blue denim, whether distressed or not, still being around after all this time (my love for colored denim lasted all of 3 months, and then I was over it), but around it is, and still, I love it. Pair with a summery blouse and heels or a simple tank and those ankle boots, this summer staple might well follow us in into Fall where we’ll be wearing them with over-size sweaters, or structured pea coats and ankle boots. To keep this look put together and city chic, stay within the classics. Pairing jeans with those staples will make this look classy and keep it from becoming beach-y.
