Being invited to attend a formal function is both terrifying and overwhelming if you don’t have the right tools to help you find the right dress, shoes, accessories, hair and makeup. I once personally witnessed a journalist who was invited to a big to-do shop frantically at H&M for a formal dress, which it happened to have but it was flouncy, had tons of chiffon sewn on in strips and it looked like the something a fairy queen from a movie would wear, and not a journalist from the city.
Case in point: don’t try to be so overly stylish with a major “wow” factor that you end up drawing more attention to the dress, than to the face. If you do find that one-of-a-kind dress, make sure it’s appropriate for the function.
I’ve created a scenario where a suitor has asked you to join him for the opening night of a ballet or show, or perhaps a formal to meet dignitaries, or perhaps an award show. Below are some dresses that I would feel confidant wearing to an event where I’m not the honored guest but where I definitely want to shine.
I chose the last dress, because though it seems a bit demure, if you did a nice up-do with a diamond choker necklace, you’d have a soft, elegant but striking look. Well, who am I kidding, bedeck yourself in diamonds regardless of the dress. Timeless, classic, and totally Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
