Preggo Vibes

It being that I’m practically 9 months pregnant, I’ve rediscovered my love for linen pants and loose shirts. I feel a little boheme in this look and not super edgy, but I imagine if I were to gather the strength to leave the house I’d throw on large, oversized black sunnies and killer wedges. None of that’s happening today, let’s be honest.

I’ll sashay around the house with a vacant longing-for-the-sea look on my face while I drink smooth move tea (#realtalk) and pray this baby comes soon.

Today’s Look

I can’t get away from doing a really glowy, natural look for my hair and beauty regime. I have a feeling it has something to do with that effervescent feeling that pregnancy can give you at times.

Here’s a list of beauty products I used today for this look!

1. Vitamin C oil

This will change your life. My skin is so soft and dewy it’s unbelievable.

2.L’Oreal Foundation

I mix mine with a dab of that Vitamin C oil to thin it out and give a more luminous finish. Since it’s so thin then I also use it on my eyelids instead of eyeshadow and a primer.

3. NYX illuminating stick

4. theBalm Hot Mama Blush

5. NYX Bronzer

6. Your favorite lip balm, mascara and brow!

Remember to contour and you’ll get a breezy summer glow!

Preggo Blues – How To Spruce Up Your Style

I’m currently 7-ish months pregnant. As a style lover (check out my Instagram – @theluxurie) living in the most tumultuous 7 months of my life thus far, in terms of my body drastically changing all the time, hasn’t just been hard to deal with, it’s been downright unpleasant at times.

Don’t get me wrong, the joy and privilege of carrying a little human hasn’t gone unnoticed. It’s special and exciting. But there are days when pulling on yet another pair of leggings with an oversized  sweater has me looking wistfully and my “other” wardrobe and dreaming of putting on that little high waisted denim skirt with the cropped blouse and some kitten heels.

I’ve had to fight somewhat hard to keep my sanity in and amongst all these changes at a time when I usually would’ve found some solace in my wardrobe, I now too don’t have that. Most days I feel frumpy, tired and super un-sexy. (My ladies have changed so much that I’ve resorted to wearing sports bras…this is sacriliage. I miss my little satin and lace lovelies!)

As a result, I’ve come up with a plan of action to assist my sanity, and by direct extension my husbands sanity, as he has to hear me quietly mutter at my ever growing bump and ever shrinking wardrobe options.

The keys to not feeling frumpy and unsexy in my book is then as such:

1. Build your inner confidence.

The first step is reminding yourself that you are creating possibly the most special and magical experience you’ll ever experience. Your body is growing a human. This surpasses any insecurity and thoughts of self-doubt and fear. You are a warrior! Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get on with it.

2. Frequent pampering sessions.

This may seem small, but setting time aside once a week to fully pamper myself has been life saving. Doing full body exfoliations and baths, pedicures, manicures, face masks, you name it has not only made me love my crazy looking body more, but it gives me time to reflect. To reflect on my connection with my hubby, my new sweet baby, my new life. Taking time to soak it all in is all you need to manage this major transition smoothly. There’s also something about a good mani/pedi that just makes a girl feel put together.

3. Shoes.

Down to the details. I used to insist that I would never wear just sneakers or sandals when I was pregnant, but alas, it being winter, I’ve practically salivated over anything totally flat and boot like. However, the seasons are changing and I’m busting out my super cute kitten heels (an inch or two never hurt anyone) and am committing to commit. An adorable pair of shoes never did hurt a girls morale.

4. Accessories.

Fun accessories will be a life saver when all you can muster is a sweater and leggings. I’ve elevated my looks many a time by simply adding statement earrings or a bold handbag. You can also play with necklaces, bracelets and rings. Remember to have FUN. Minimalism be damned.

5. Outfits.

I refused to buy an entire wardrobe of maternity clothing simply because I knew I wouldn’t wear half of it for longer than two months. Instead I invested in two or 3 maternity jeans and pants, some super long tank tops and an abundance of sweaters from H&M’s Basics section. I’ve also managed to squeeze into some of my other sweaters, t-shirts, dress shirts, cotton dresses and leggings. The days that you get sick of wearing the same thing again are days to get creative! My low rise boyfriend jeans still fit through all this time so I wore those with a tee and kitten heels for a fun but semi polished look. Or belt a maxi cardigan over a dress or leggings to give yourself a figure. The options are not endless, but they do exist.

Remember to wake up in the morning, to put on a dab of mascara and lipstick, brush your hair and face the day. Doing these little things will help set the standard for what I’m assuming will be a crazy first few months. I’m preparing myself for sleepless nights, lots of throwing my hands in the air and deep breathing. But I know I can set myself up for success by creating healthy habits and routines now that are flexible enough for mommy-hood.

Let me know some things that you did as a new mom to help keep you sane!!

The Essential Wardrobe: Denim & Pants

In the last few articles I detailed some closet essentials that every girl ought to have as a basic foundation for your wardrobe. I see these pieces not as the ONLY pieces you’re allowed to have, but rather the pieces that form the skeleton, or the bones for the rest of your wardrobe. When you have those wardrobe essentials, you can have the fun crazy things without being concerned that it won’t “go” with anything.

Today I’m discussing denim and pants. There are so many styles of denim out there, with so many different body types that it would almost be wrong of me to tell you exactly what style you need to have. You have to wear what fits your body type the best. In my book The Essential Wardrobe  I write a nice exercise to do with someone you trust, that includes trying on all your jeans and tossing the ones that don’t look amazing on you.

The right denim for your body is out there. You just have to find it! Don’t give up hope, be enthusiastic. Ninety percent of the time, what you think looks horrible on you, probably looks amazing. You just needed a fresh pair of eyes. Get someone you trust to be with you when you try denim on.

I’ve picked out the style that I wear the most, which is skinny jeans. You could substitute these with any other style though. The main focus here is the wash and the distressing.

A List of Denim

  • Pitch Black Denim
  • Faded Black-ish Denim
  • Classic Blue Denim
  • A “Fun” Denim (Choose a color, style, distressing etc that you love and is not like the others)
  • Classic White Denim

screen-capture-5

Pants

A good set of pants will never lead you astray. It’s imperative that you have at least one of these styles as part of your essential wardrobe pieces. These are great or the days that you don’t feel like wearing denim; you can toss on a fun tee with the black cigarette pants and some kitten heels and you have a seriously adorable look. Take those some pants and wear them to a business situation. They’re so versatile. Same goes with the white pants.

Pants to have:

  • Black cigarette trousers
  • White long straight leg trousers.

I hope these helped!

The Essential Wardrobe: Blouses & Tee’s

Three days ago we chatted about what an Essential Wardrobe is and why every girl needs one in the article that also included your first batch of undergarment needs.

Today we’re detailing the next step. Tee’s and blouses.

You’ll notice throughout this series that the color scheme basically stays the same, apart from a few pops of color. This is because having an orange shirt and purple pants makes it hard to coordinate a effortless look. Neutral colors are easy because everything goes with everything. The oversized light blue linen blouse can go with denim cut-offs or a classy white pencil skirt.

The items I picked out are pieces that I personally love, they’re examples of what you could look for. This essentials list is also high customizable. If you find that you don’t love wearing heels (that article will come in a few weeks) then opt for more flats. Although do give the heels a try! Try everything. Because this essential wardrobe is the foundation, there’s two ways to work it. You can fill it out with the “meat” which might be the stuff you wear on a day to day basis. Gym clothes, farm gear, etc. The second way is that this becomes your “uniform”. The items you always wear. Your “meat” items become the sprinkling of on-trend pieces or those pops of colors. It all depends on your life-style.

Blouses

screen-capture-3

I love, love, love a good blouse. So effortless. The list of must-haves is as such:

  1. Classic stripes: This is will never not be in style.
  2. Black: I’d go for a chiffon or satin, something that can be dressed up and down. A plain button front blouse would be just that.. plain. Make it splashy. Give your wardrobe some texture and life with different types of materials. Chiffon, linen, satin, etc.
  3. White dress shirt: I love this particular shirts style elements. It’s not your classic  office wear white button front, and it has some fun details. The length means you can rock this with leggings and perhaps cute flats. Win.
  4. Silk Blouse: I love wearing white, ivory and creams because it looks classy and timeless. This particular blouse is great because of the hidden buttons, but also because it only opens half way. This can be both office appropriate and casual.
  5. Casual linen or denim blouse: I love this light blue linen blouse. It’s the perfect blend between chic and casual. If you don’t love denim shirts then this is a good option to give more color and texture variety.

Tee’s

screen-capture-2

I live in my t-shirts, so they have to be good quality and super comfortable. I love oversized tee’s because they look so effortless, and because I’m curvy, I don’t like to always accentuate absolutely everything. I can breath in this style. For some of you however, this may not be your look. So pick something that you love and can live in!

  1. Something with stripes. I love this tee because it has some great style elements. The collar being a bit tighter and the sleeves being a bit looser make it something unique. If you absolutely hate stripes then pick a lovely neutral color, like a blush pink or nude.
  2. White
  3. Black
  4. Grey

Stay tuned this week! We’ll be tackling denim and dress pants!

The Essential Wardrobe: Why Should I Have it? (And A Comprehensive Undergarments List)

My husband and I are in the midst of a season of life that includes lots of moving. Due to this, I’ve developed what I like to call the Essential Wardrobe. It’s the things that I absolutely MUST have in order to have a co-hesive closet that can be moved around easily, and can be appropriate for any situation whether dressy, casual, business appropriate or any other circumstance.

I’ve written loads of articles detailing what the perfect closet looks like. So have many other bloggers.. The difference here is that this collection isn’t just 30 things that go together. They’re the essentials of a wardrobe that any woman ought to have, regardless if you live in Paris or on a farm in Minnesota (that might be too extreme but you get my gist).  These pieces are timeless. They were stylish 20 years ago and they’ll be stylish 20 years from now. Think of them as a frame, a foundation, a skeleton, the scaffolding. These pieces create the infrastructure of an excellent wardrobe.

I love shopping. I can’t have only 3 blouses. With an essential wardrobe you can go out and get the fun blouse that doesn’t go with anything. Why? You have your essential pieces to hold down the fort. Every splurgy piece you buy will “go” with any of your essential wardrobe pieces. That nut-so blouse? It’ll go with your essential black cigarette chinos. You’re having a crazy morning, you’re late for work and literally zero time to get dressed. What do you do? You throw on your essential silk blouse and your essential pencil skirt, and your essential pumps before you lope off to work. If you’re a house-wife it might look something like leggings and a hoodie. (My current situation).

It goes without saying that your essential wardrobe pieces are pieces that you invested time and money in. Don’t grab the first thing off the rack. Try on a bunch of different brands. Find the one that works for you. Make sure it’s from a place that has a reputation of stocking good quality items. When you wash them, take care of them, baby them. These pieces are meant to last you a while.

The essential wardrobe creates space and opportunity for winning. And you are a winner!

This week I’m going to discuss the very first group of items.  Underwear. You may think that this wouldn’t matter but it’s the first line of defense. It must matter. In my late twenties I discovered the magic of spanx. For having a naturally curvy body, this was a little too late.  That is what I’m trying to prevent. I want you to be prepared for anything.

A Comprehensive List of Undergarments

This week I’m going to discuss the very first group of items.  Undergarments. You may think that this wouldn’t matter but it’s the first line of defense. It must matter. In my late twenties I discovered the magic of spanx. For having a naturally curvy body, this was 5 years too late.  That is what I’m trying to prevent. I want you to be prepared for anything.

My lists may come across as a bit over the top, and this will either infuriate you or inebriate you with joy, but here goes:

  1. Every-day  bras: in colors nude and black.
  2. Every-day cotton panties: nude and black. (Cotton: so your lady parts can breathe).
  3. Unlined bra/s: For when you need to be comfortable.
  4. Matching sets – pick a number based on your obsession with underwear.
  5. Spanx – in nude and black. (If you don’t need spanx then know that the Spanx Club is jealous but understanding)
  6. Hosiery – sheer black, a few pairs.

Stay tuned for the next weeks article on essential wardrobe blouses!

Mediterranean Vacation

Do you ever start planning your wardrobe for a holiday thats weeks away? I did. And ended up with this holiday inspired look. I’m loving a style that speaks to that Italian and French tranquil, laid back resort look. Perhaps I should make a mood board… but I imagine lots of linen, silks, embroidery, muted tones with black, leather and suede with pops of bright colors. I’m thinking oversized everything, distressed denim and tousled hair.

Get Ready! Flared Everything Is Here…

We all know that trends work in cycles. One day it’s out, the next day it’s in. We can apply this same logic to the return of flared jeans. What was once a 90’s  girls’ dream jean has become the current go to. (I’m silently gasping).

We can blame the re-awakening of 70’s style for that revival. It’s been flared jeans and boho blouses everywhere for the last 3 years and so we’ve progressed to this. From the 70’s we rushed straight into the 90’s and I’m not sure how we connected the 70’s and 90’s, but as I’m typing this I’m realizing it was the Birkenstocks.

I’m flabbergasted. I never thought I’d see girls willingly donning adidas sneakers, flared jeans, oversized hoodies (literally my uniform in high school) again in my lifetime.  I’m giggling because I know a percentage of women above a certain age group, with salivating mouths and gleaming eyes, have been anxiously awaiting the return of flared jeans. There is literally a whole sub-culture of humans who thought/think that skinny jeans were/are a scourge on humanity. Articles have been written about it in the Washington Post. I kid you not. Look it up.

To wear flared denim you have to have a few things in mind. The fades and washes that are trendy today, are not the ones that were trendy 15 years ago.

The style guidelines when it comes to flares are as such:

  1. Imagine the flared denim of the 70’s. This is the look you’re going for. High-waisted,  platform or wedge sandals, your best off-the-shoulder blouse you can find. Blouses in general. Vintage band shirts. Camp in this area.
  2. Unless you’re trying to make a statement, sneakers are generally a no. It’s just too complicated a look to pull off unless you’re an “off-duty” model. If that were the case,  you could wear burlap and it’d be trending the next day. Forever 21 would have it a week later for $9.99 in their front window. Fast fashion, man.
  3. Stay away from contrasting fades, washes, whiskerings, “you-sat-in-bleach” looks. It’s just not a thing.. yet. Solid washes with some distressing are where everyones partying at.
  4. If you do low-waisted, do it well. Do it because you feel the need to show off 3 inches of tummy. (A la Karlie Kloss in that one picture.. you know the one, it’s all over pinterest.)
  5. Don’t half ass your look, lest you look like a vintage Wetseal window poster. Commit to it, and it will be good to you.

Cliff Notes:

70’s everything, 90’s grunge, distressed, texture, “I’m with the band”.

Check out these looks below for some luxsperation…

  1. What makes this first look work is that you’re running out of the house to do errands. Don’t try to impress people with this look. They won’t be.

screen-capture

2. What makes this look work is the cropped top. It’s sits nice and snug, giving your look a modern edge while the platforms and earrings hint at seventies glam. With this look, I’d do a low, messy chignon for your hair.

screen-capture-1

3. This every-day look is probably the one I’d be living in. A distressed t-shirt, comfy wedges and vintage vibe. Keep it chill.

screen-capture-2

4. This last one is also amazing. The knot front blouse is structured enough to allow some space for something a bit more grungy, like the suede bag. Pair this look with flats and these double bridge aviators to complete your look.

The Best Spring/Summer Dresses

I’ve decided that it’s imperative that I invest in a few dresses this season. The options are just too dazzling. We’re talking metallics, whimsical whites, florals etc. You name it, it’s on the street and I need it in my closet.

I’ve picked out my top 6 favorite styles and fabrics including a whimsical white, which will always be in style, a truly timeless and classic piece. I’m also loving denim dresses for their laid back, vintage vibe.

Metallics have been a fun addition this season as well; from shoes, bags, and now dresses. This shift dress is the perfect design for a metallic color because it’s simple but the shimmer is eye-catching. Florals are huge this season as well, especially in more structured looks, like these shirt and body-con dresses. Last but not least we have the off-the-shoulder number from Mango. It’s the perfect throw back to 70’s style, and paired with lace up sandals makes it the quintessential summer look.

Putting together an outfit is without a doubt one of the most frustrating things about getting ready in the morning. A part of this struggle is recognizing that you may not have a closet that works together, is cohesive. Having lots of clothing is great, but having clothing that works together is even better. The “glue” of your closet are items that work with everything, creating multiple looks with different “feels”; dressy, casual, work appropriate etc.

I chose two items that are interesting, have great design elements and wouldn’t be considered items that you can wear in multiple scenarios. The first is an off the shoulder blouse, the second a zip up jacket. Both can be worn to a work scenario (think Fridays..) and both can be dressed up or down.

Check out these two “glue” items that I use in 5 different looks to show you how having pieces like these can expand the versatility of your closet. I also re-used a few elements like the shoes, handbags and sunglasses to show that you don’t need tons of different accessories. Just the right ones.

Must-Have Bags For The Perfect Closet

The perfect closet is like an elusive unicorn. It’s the closet that has all the latest on trend pieces mixed in with the classics and basics. The perfect balance between minimal and chic. Getting to this closet takes time, financial investment, and the knowledge that you won’t get away with abusing your clothing, but that you’ll have to take really good care of your things. (No tumble drying!)

The quest to the penultimate closet also includes organizing your bag situation. Slimming down your wardrobe from tons of semi great bags you only use a few times, to the few quality bags you’ll use over and over again will take diligence and self-control. If you’re serious about tackling your bags but the financial investment part scares you, then shop at places like TJMaxx, Zara, Mango, and other department stores that have really great leather products but for a fraction of the cost of high-end names. Same material quality, different price point.

Here’s my list!

The Tote: An Every-Day Bag

A tote bag is a necessary bag not only for style reasons but for functionality. You can use a great tote for work or school to pile in your books, laptop etc or as a great weekend travel bag. Think about traveling and using it as your carry on. When you’re looking for a tote, look for one that’s structured and leather. Always do leather. Make sure it’s not too small (should be tall and wide enough to fit a laptop and some books, in my opinion), and a neutral color with not too many flashy aspects like buckles and zippers. You want to go for timeless. Will this bag be in style next season and 10 seasons from now. Think colors like black, grey, tan. I’d try find one that has a zipper closure so you don’t have sticky fingers rummaging in your bag if you live in a place with pickpockets around.

The Weekender

Your weekend bag is something you can toss on your shoulder and go. It’s small, no hassle and carries the essentials. You can run about town and do your thing without lugging something heavy around. Stick to your neutral colors, that way you don’t have to worry that neon pink is clashing with your look. It goes without saying, choose a quality leather item.

The Black Tie Event Clutch

We’ve all been caught in situations where we’ve been invited somewhere nice and realize we don’t have a bag to go with the elegance of the evening. That being said, a “black tie event” clutch will go a long ways to ensuring your date, broadway, and fancy soiree nights are fully prepared for. You’re most likely wearing a gorgeous black dress to one of these events, so have fun with a clutch that is both elegant but has some great style elements.

The Wallet/Every-Day Clutch

This little guy is where I live. I despise carrying around my tote (it’s usually full..), and that weekend bag isn’t always appropriate. But what IS appropriate is this wallet that doubles as a clutch. It’s small enough to throw into your tote or weekend bag, but big enough to carry like a clutch. It fits all the necessary things like your phone, a lipstick, a few credit cards, some cash, keys, and your license. So adorable!

The Fun Bag

This is sort of a bonus category, but in case you feel like you may get tired of your neutral colored bags, it’s fun to have that “other” bag for the days when you feel like you’re made from sun rays. We all have those days! Try a fun colored bag, or if colors aren’t your thing, go for a neutral color with crazy amounts of texture. Thing tassels, buckles, zippers. Make sure when doing a fun colored bag that your overall look is well balanced. Depending on the outfit, looking like a neon eye-shadow palette might not be so hot.

How To! Wear Flirty Lacy Tops Like An Adult

Summer clothes, Spring clothes, Fashion wear, Fashion trends, Summer fashion trends, Spring fashion trends, Fashion styles, Latest fashion trends, Spring fashion, Fashion trend, Summer clothing, Street style, Street style fashion, Style blog, Style blogger, Fashion blog, Fashion blogger, Outfit inspiration, Look book, Street fashion, fashion clothes for women, ladies fashion, fashion online shopping, women fashion, women clothing, fashion online, fashion, style, styles, fashion styles, in style, fashion trends, latest fashion, fall fashion, street style, my style, celebrity style, trending, trends,

I’m turning the big 3-0 this year and my nerves are almost shattered. Apart from it meaning that I have to admit to being half a real adult now, it means that there’s certain things that I just really can’t wear anymore. (An article about that later…)

During New Years, one of my closest darlings came to visit us in the UK. Whilst out shopping I found the cutest little white lacy number that would’ve looked adorable on her. Her opinion was different because she felt that she would look like a child in such a dear little top. (She’s gorgeous btw). I, however, disagreed, and have since made it an effort to come up with a way to wear a flirty little number without looking like a desperate 16 year old. (If you find that I do, please tell me!)

The first order of business is to find a top that fits you really well in all the right places. This goes without saying.

Secondly, the bottom. Right now destroyed denim is everywhere, especially high and mid waisted, also boyfriend and flared styles. Any of these are a great companion to your little top, but if destroyed denim isn’t your thing, then try a solid dark blue (or black) pair of high-waisted (or mid, depending on your body type) jeans with a nice wide belt that stands out. Then add your shoes. I’d go with a strappy heeled sandal to distance your self, in this case, from the sneaker wearing youths.

Hair and makeup is next, and I currently love doing a low semi-messy bun.  Think Dolce & Gabbana. (I tug at the back of the hair so it’s not super neat looking.) I love this demure look because you can wear anything bold and that low bun tames it right down. For makeup, I did a bold smokey eye with a soft, natural lip and dewy cheeks to lift the overall look and again, and add age to the top. This is the one good time where you want to add age. Doing a neutral, no makeup look is good for the beach in the middle of summer, but any other time and your overall look will appear more juvenile that necessary. (Unless you were to do the other elements of this look, in which case you could probably get away with it.)

Last but not least is statement jewelry. A cuff bracelet and heavy (think huge) earrings add a touch of sophistication and timeless style. (Again, Dolce & Gabbana esq)

The Bomber Jacket: Why You Need One

This 90’s grunge (at least in my memory) has taken quite a a major turn and presented us with a pretty unforeseen comeback. Sure Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid were seen wearing this but is that enough to make it a closet staple? It a little bit is.

I remember seeing boys with jeans wrapped around their thighs wearing oversized bomber jackets in high school, which was almost 12 years ago (huge gasp), and I never thought in a million years that I would see this come back like it did. The great thing about a black bomber jacket is that the shape is unique enough to create a really interesting look. If you’re wearing a classic look, it’s enough to add enough to add that extra edge to your look.

It’s unexpected.

I’ve come to love bomber jackets so much that I’d almost classify it as a closet staple. Jackets come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to find the ones that work for you and I do feel as though this one works for just about anyone. Whether you’re draping it around your shoulders your simply have it zipped over your work out clothes, it’s really a great look.

Check out these examples below!

5 Great Reasons You Should Thrift

I love shopping at consignment and thrift stores. You never know what you’ll come across, and I’ve always managed to find real gems. Apart from feeling like you’re contributing to society by up-cycling goods that may’ve never had another chance, you’ll feel like you’re wearing unique pieces not accessible to every single person.

5 Good Reasons To Thrift Shop:

  1. Finding last season gems is always a fun find! Especially if they’re a classic piece you can style regardless of the trends.
  2. Saving Cash. Thrifting is a great way to scratch that shopping itch, and you save money by doing it.
  3. Finding pieces they don’t even sell in your country! So much win.
  4. Vintage treasures you’ll never regret finding. Think denim, skirts, boxy blouses, oversized sweaters!
  5. Amazing fur coats. They always have the best fur coats.

I recently found a light grey, slight cropped, cashmere polo neck sweater, made in Italy, for £4. You literally can’t go wrong.

Check it out here!

Winter Style: Palazzo Pants

I’m loving this look, how the shapes work together to create a visually intriguing outfit.

Cropped sweater and palazzo pants are a classic, chic look, whether summer or winter, that’ll always be in style. What I specifically love about this look is the casual dressy-ness of it. The sweater seems to be a bit more informal while the pants pick the look up nicely. Add the booties and some earrings with an interesting bag and you have a wholesome look. Add accessories for fun. IMG_2993

Flouncy Little Blouses

This past season we were all totally obsessed, bonkers, over 70’s style. I mean, it was tasseled EVERYTHING, suede all over the place and for all those girls who love flared jeans; their moment to shine.

I didn’t hate it.

A key aspect of 70’s style that might’ve been overlooked just a touch was the Blouse. In the 70’s it was the uniform of the independent, working woman. The flouncier, the better. Since then, blouses with neckties have  been relegated to the secretaries and the upper-class house wives. It was kind of a fashion no-no to be seen in one in the 90’s and 2000’s in terms of street style, and up until recently you really couldn’t find an adorable alternative, unless you worked in an office.

What I love about the blouse I’m wearing is:

1. It’s sheer. It’s sexy. It’s mysterious.

2. The texture is on point. Literally. It has little velvet polka dots all over it.

3. It oozes femininity, in an age of “be all and everything”.

You can really dress this up or down, but I prefer to wear blouses like this one with ripped jeans and other statement pieces. That way you give it a bit of an edge and it doesn’t come across as dowdy, or secretarial.

Let me know what you think!

This look can go big, wavy hair, or half-up half down and still look glamorous.

(I’m embarrassed at how utterly “Stepford Wives” this pose it. But I had to try it.)

For makeup I went with a smokey eye and nude lip. Modern but also timeless. I did my hair in the end in a half top-knot, such a on-trend look really helps keep your look in the present.

Every fashion group preaches from the roof-tops that a major closet staple is a black blazer. The necessity is real, whether it’s a boyfriend fit or completely tailored to your body. Wearing a blazer in such a way that you don’t come across like a wannabe lawyer takes a little bit of crafting, but it’s totally do-able and the look is absolutely amazing.

Throw a blazer over a vintage tee with distressed denim and you have a classic cool-girl look. It’s the perfect accessory to a really bold look, for instance a heavily textured skirt or dress, perhaps something with really bold patterns.

I felt like this is the year of the girl boss for me, and I found this blazer just in time! There’s something uplifting and strengthening about wearing what you’re feeling. It encourages you to take bold steps and make risky decisions, that hopefully pay off in the long run.

Happy New Year!!

Why You Should Try Unique Sweaters!

Apart from really elevating a look and giving your over style a total makeover, unique sweaters (ones with a special or different design or design element) are a timeless commodity.

Some examples:

You can dress any of these up or down depending on your situation and your wardrobe contents. I love pairing a unique sweater with a midi length pencil skirt and ankle boots. It creates a really fun, distinct look that stands out in a crowd. Dressing it down can be as easy as throwing on your favorite jeans and sneakers.

Your Boldest NYE Look Ever!

New Years Eve is a prime time to cover yourself in head to toe sparkles. Anything with sequins is a go. BUT for those of us who need to for-go sparkly dresses for a heavy night of YOLO (my best named this years soiree.. Who still says “yolo”!? She does..), then you’ll need a look that can transcend both weather, time and activities.

Taking a cue from Miranda Kerr and her booties with stockings and shorts look; the look below is a few notches up from street style, to evening wear.

I love wearing shorts and stockings, it’s the perfect balance between comfortable and chic, and you can do just about anything in them! Dress this years ensemble up by wearing shorts with a major WOW factor. Pair it with ankle boots and an oversized coat for comfort, but don’t forget those design details! A mesh shirt and silky tank is a great balance between sexy and a 90’s party.

Wear your hair tousled and loose for a fun, playful look.

Christmas Day Look!

I love oversized sweater dresses! They’re amazingly comfortable and have a certain city chic look about them. Make sure if you buy one that it’s not too long, or too short. Mid to low thigh is perfect. They’re versatile to wear, think sneakers, flats or even sandals, in warmer climates. This is a great piece to have in your closet!

Pair your dress with some chic ankle boots and chunky accessories for a fun, laid back look. I draped a oversized military style coat over the shoulders of the dress to ward off the cold.

Shopping tip: If you can’t find a dress you love, try sweaters that are bigger than your size. They’ll be longer but still have a good shape, though you may have to roll up the sleeves.

Some street style looks for inspiration..

Pajama Tops! 3 Reasons To Wear Them.

3 reasons to wear pajama style tops:

  1. They’re incredibly comfortable.
  2. Your street style repertoire will sky rocket.
  3. The semi disheveled look gives you a cool girl, “I can wear anything” vibe. Obviously what we’re striving for.

I recently acquired the perfect pajama top, it doesn’t have buttons but the collar has a nice deep neck making it less drab-y. The material is soft and cozy and the cuffs add a nice sophisticated touch. The color is a heavenly dark blue that looks perfect on soft winter skin.  Comfort and style on point. Accessorize or layer with bold patterns and/or textures!

Check out these street style looks to get more inspiration. I especially love the last one. I’m already ready for summer!

Wintery Warm Look!

Who loves being cold?? Absolutely no one. What I love about this look is that it has great details and lots of textures. The buttons on the pants compliment the eyelit holes in the sweater, while the tassels play off nicely on the bracelet. The suedes also compliment each other. Super cozy!

Summer to Winter: White Pants

I love wearing white/ivory/cream in the winter time. It feels fresh and whimsical. Taking classic summer pieces and working them into a winter wardrobe is easier than it seems.

For these pants I wanted to go dark and cozy on top, layering a charcoal grey wool sweater with the scarf created a really nice textured look that was season appropriate.

To make an awesome outfit remember things like the texture (does it have things like tassels, is it woven, have special details etc.), or color scheme, patterns, think about unlikely pieces that “go” together. A flight jacket, pencil skirt and cute booties make a great outfit, though you wouldn’t classically think to put them together.

Outfit Inspo! For The Occasion

I put a look together for an occasion where you may have to look a little classier but still a little relaxed. I’m totally obsessed with this cropped metallic knit tank, it gives the whole look a hollywood vibe when you pair it with these classic high waisted trousers and the vintage esq clutch. I would drape the blazer over your shoulders to polish it off.

I’ve had a love affair with all things earrings since I was a child, running around the house with my moms clip-ons and a scarf as a cape.

Oversized earrings have made a tremendous comeback. Dolce and Gabbana have been paving the way for years, but the rest of the populace have finally caught up to the exotic, the fabulous, the chic oversized earrings. There’s something pretty striking about a woman who can rock great accessories.

My favorite look is a tee, a pair of jeans, booties and a great pair of oversized earrings. They make a great statement piece without you losing the luxury of comfort.

Spring Mood Board

I CAN NOT WAIT for warm weather to be here. I feel like I’ve never been more ready for sunny blue skies, warm breezes, lazy days by the pool/beach, and raspberry smoothies.

Outfit wise, I’m feeling lots of whites, creams, sandy colors that include burnt reds and oranges but also bright pinks. I’m getting major vacay vibes from these outfits!

We’re heading to the US Virgin Islands in a few weeks and I already have my outfits sorted…you could say I’m a touch excited.

No Fear For the Fringe

Fringes, tassels, boho, 70’s glam, 90’s grunge, etc etc.. These have all been styles that’ve been around for a few years now. Our obsession with all things tassel reached fever pitch circa last year with women salivating over anything suede and fringed, but thankfully we’ve settled into a happy balance. Unless you’re a street style star or a insta-stylist it can be hard to style a fringed look without looking like a wash-up from last years Coachella trip, or a wild west woman who is really wild, and really west. It also may appear to be a challenge to grab, let’s say, a fringed hand bag, and worry that you’ll get severe stares at Target. But don’t fear the fringe. Embrace it.

Styling fun, spicy things can be an enjoyable experience, and it adds that certain pop to a look that takes it from here… to HERE. Knowing how to style fringed things will take you from “girl-next-door” to “Paris-here-I-come”, and getting those style basics down will ensure that you don’t suffer from buyers remorse when you see your garment or accessory hanging in the closet.

My general rules for styling fringe:

  1. Keep it simple, keep it sweet. Don’t over fringe. Keep it to one accessory or clothing piece.
  2. Keep it neutral. Let your tassel do the talking, and if it’s colorful, then keep the rest of the colors in your look muted.
  3. Elevate your look with elegant shoes. Try flat mules, heels or booties. I reserve a sneakers and tassel combination for the street style queen. She’s being photographed, whilst we on the other hand, are not.
  4. Rules are made to broken. Have fun!!

Check out some outfit ideas with the Barbara Bonner “Lilith”. It screams iconic fringed bag and makes for a great accessory.

The Essential Wardrobe: Dresses & Jackets

You’ve made it so far! We’re finally on dresses and jackets, the essential ones every girl should have in her closet.

Dresses are one of those things that, although perhaps not worn often, are essential in our wardrobes. In my ebook, The Essential Wardrobe, I tell a story of when my husband told me, very last minute, that we actually had a christmas party to attend the next evening. He had bought tickets for his companys’ annual affair and was naturally looking forward to the festivities. I would’ve been in a major flap about it because I don’t like surprises that include me having to be dressed a certain way, but luckily I had gone shopping that summer and decided to invest in a classic, fancy LBD that would be business appropriate but also very soiree appropriate. I had something to wear! No stress. This is why having those classic pieces come in handy, you never know what will come your way! A surprise date night, a spontaneous night out with your girls, who knows!

Dresses:

  • Something fun! I love this little metallic shirt dress because you can throw heels on and it’s dressy and fun, or white converse and it’s casual and cute.
  • A good every day dress. This wrap dress has stolen my heart! It’s easy enough to toss on in the morning if you’re running out of the house, paired with suede sandals. Or throw on some heels and you have a fun casual dinner look.

screen-capture-10

  • The bombshell! Every girl needs a bombshell dress! This is for those special occasions, date night, “you want to make your man swoon”, dressy parties etc. If you wear this with stockings and a cardigan in the winter with super fun accessories, you have a more demure and classy look. Throw a boyfriend blazer over your shoulders in the summer! You can also wear super cute black kitten heels and loose chignon to tone down the sex appeal if you need to.
  • The formal dress. This dress is perfect for functions, business meetings, formal occasions where you need to be a bit more serious. Do tousled beachy hair and big earrings (I’m talking Dolce & Gabbana status) to make this dress a bit more light-hearted if you need a black dress, but not quite at the bombshell level.

screen-capture-11

Jackets

I’m all for fun trendy jackets, but I’m also a sensible girl. And being sensible means you have things that prepare you for the elements. Here is a list of must-haves!

  • The trench. This is a no brainer. If you want something that’s a bit edgier, opt for a black trench. This is for work, going out, visiting friends.
  • The “muck about” coat. This is a waxed coat that can handle any weather, is sturdy and can get some mud on it and it’ll be ok. This is the coat you wear when running errands, going on walks, going to the gym, all round doing life in not so fair weather. This is not for work, visiting friends, dinner parties.
  • The boyfriend blazer. This jacket goes with EVERYTHING. It’s a perfect spring/summer/fall coat when it’s too hot to wear an actual jacket, but you want to look a little more put together, or have your shoulders covered.
  • Denim jacket. My choice here is a black one because I love wearing black. But get a classic denim jacket that suits your personal style. Also goes with absolutely everything.
  • Leather jacket. Also can be customized to suit your style, but a good leather jacket never does anyone wrong! If leather really isn’t your thing then try a suede option in a more neutral color.

The Essential Wardrobe: Creating Looks With Your Essential Pieces, Part Two

So far, we’ve covered tops, denim, pants, tank tops and skirts. Creating outfits out of your essential pieces should be the easiest thing in the world. You’ve purchased things that will always go together, no matter what. Below are a few examples of outfits from the previous articles’ pieces that you can easily create using your own things that you’ve picked up. Remember you can choose your essential item pieces based on your own style preferences, following the basic guidelines of material, colors and basic style.

Look One:

I call this my “brunch” look. I love wearing a cozy sweatshirt with unexpected pieces. Here we have this gorgeous white skirt (or color of your choice, if white isn’t your thing), a black silk tank, black flat mules and a cute clutch. I am also a major fan of clutches and have a few in different styles.

screen-capture-8

Look Two:

Here we have the black pencil skirt, a linen tee, nude heels, dressy sunnies, fun earrings and your black hand bag. I created this look to show that with the right accessories, you can dress down a pencil skirt with a tee, but still look put together. You could even substitute the heels for the black flat mules and have a similar effect.

screen-capture-3

Look Three:

Here we have all the same accessories as Look Two, but now with a simple black silk tank and the black chinos. This is why it’s important to have really great accessories. Simple outfits are transformed into really stylish looks when you have the right accessories.

screen-capture-4

Look Four:

Here we have your “fun” jeans, your “fun” tank, same nude heels and a “fun” bag. In my essentials list I always include picking a “fun” item. Something, that is good quality and timeless, but not necessarily those neutral colors or simple designs. They’re a little out of the box. I chose, for my “fun” items; these distressed jeans and the striped cropped tank with a bold and colorful bag. I’d consider the bomber jacket one of my essential pieces (more on light coats and bags later on), and also the nude heels as an essential item.

screen-capture-5

Look Five:

Your “fun” skirt, in my case denim, with the essential white blouse and fun accessories. Notice how these nude heels are being recycled through a lot of the outfits, despite them being quite busy. Also notice I’m using primarily two sunglasses; a dressy pair, and a casual pair.

screen-capture-1

Look Six:

Your pencil skirt, sleeveless white blouse, and accessories. Notice how all the pieces in this look are the same as Look Two, except for the tops. That’s how easy it is to recycle looks. Simple by adding a dressy blouse to essential the same outfit, you’ve created a stunning dressy look.

screen-capture-2

Look Seven:

Here we have the bomber jacket, white skirt, blue linen blouse (in place of denim, more on that here), black mules and a fun clutch. This is another way to dress down a dressy skirt, tuck the front of that comfy blouse in, toss the jacket over your shoulders and you have a really simple but nicely put together look.

Look Eight:

The splashy look! Grab that sequin skirt, bedeck yourself in all things sparkly and have fun!

The Essential Wardrobe: Sleeveless Tops & Skirts

If it were winter, this title would read “The Essential Wardrobe: Knits” . But lucky for us it’s summer and so our wardrobes must reflect this.

In the ongoing “Essential Wardrobe” series, we’ve covered denim, pants, blouses, tees and even under garments. Today we’re going to focus on sleeveless tops and skirts.

Tanks or Sleeveless Tops

  • White cotton, linen or brushed silk. Don’t just find a plain white tank top, get something truly special.
  • Black silk.
  • Something fun! Stick to good materials and choose a style or color that you feel is timeless and suits you extremely well. Nothing can every surpass an item of clothing that fits truly well.

Skirts

I love skirts! They are a vital part to any wardrobe. Here are some essentials to have.

  • Black pencil skirt. Always. Whether for work, funeral, meeting, dressy date, etc etc. You can never go wrong with a black pencil skirt.
  • White pencil skirt. The same goes for this. In regards to white clothing; if you have small children or a terrible knack for spilling things and you know that white is not your friend, then opt for another neutral color. Whether it’s a flowy cream, hunter green or something along those lines. Make sure then that the rest of your neutrals are all in the same color family so that your outfits go together regardless. (Creams and reds, or creams and greens, never reds and greens as essential pieces).
  • A splashy dressy skirt – something with sequins or gold. This is your party skirt. Every girl needs at least one.
  • A fun every day skirt. Cotton or linen are good choice and I also love denim because it’s hardy and ages well. Choose a style that suits you that you can live in.

Next time we’ll do some outfits! Check out my new ebook “The Essential Wardrobe: How To Have the Perfect Closet“!!

The Essential Wardrobe: Creating Amazing Looks With The Essential Pieces

We’ve written a few articles so far detailing those essential wardrobe pieces, and talked about how they’re the bones of your closet. With these pieces, or pieces like the ones I’m about to show you, you can create innumerable looks with a few of your choice accessories.

So far we’ve talked about tees, blouses, denim and pants. So with those four categories, here a few looks that incorporate pieces from this, and this article.

You’ll notice that I recycled the shoes and accessories in these looks. As much as I love shoes, it’s not always necessary to have 30 pairs. Check it out:

First Look: You’ll notice I grabbed the striped blouse and my “fun” denim with classic espadrilles, a shoulder bag and sunnies. Your “fun” denim is the piece that you choose outside of your black, blue and white classic denim. Choose one that had distressing, or is a fun wash or shade of color. Something that speaks to who you are, your style.

screen-capture

Look Two: Here we have those cigarette trousers. Paired with your essential striped tee, espadrilles, sunnies and shoulder bag. Your look is dressy casual. This is perfect for grabbing lunch with an acquaintance or an informal business brunch or coffee date. You decide.

Look Three: I love this look because it’s summery and breezy. I would tuck the front of this blouse into the pants. This top is one of the essentials and takes the place of a denim shirt. I don’t particularly love denim shirts so I’ve chosen a light blue linen one in it’s stead. It still serves the same purpose. The pants are gorgeous for any occasion, and in this look you have another casual, but dressier outfit. Notice I recycled all the same accessories from the previous looks.

Look Four: Your classic silk shirt and black-ish denim from your essential pieces are spruced up with fun earrings, an adorable clutch and belt that really pop and then some minimal black heeled sandals. This style of heeled sandal is easily my favorite and I would own it in at least three different colors if I could. They’re chic, simple and classic.

In your wardrobe, your accessories are everything. Because my wardrobe tends to have a lot of neutral colors, I opt for accessories that are really unique and special. They create the frosting for an amazing look.

Much Love!
